Competitors exist and are challenging Microsoft's former dominance in the marketplace.
Microsoft's recent strategy seems to be one of accommodation and inclusion, as displayed by recent corporate agreements and the Dot Net Framework. Whidbey (Windows2005) is the latest of the products and will likely continue this strategy.
